(2)Do I need to go through a pre-operative check before surgery?

The preoperative check is essential. It lasts two hours and it is performed one day before surgery. It includes several examinations with special instruments. The results of the examinations will be evaluated by the doctor who will decide which of the methods of refractive surgery is suitable for you and your eyes. The doctor will discuss it with you and the surgery will be programmed for the next day.

(3)What should I pay attention to before the surgery?

We request you to remove your contact lenses approximately 1 month before (if they are soft) the preoperative control. If they are rigid, approximately 1-2 months before.

  • Rest well the evening before surgery
  • Get the drops that the doctor had told you in the preoperative control

(4)What should I pay attention to the day of surgery?

  • Bring with you dark sunglasses
  • Bring company with you to avoid driving
  • Do not wear perfumes or make-up

top

(5)How much time does the surgery last?

The total time of surgery does not exceed 15 minutes for each eye. Most of the time is the preparation, the cleaning of the eye and the centration of the laser than the treatment. The laser bean treats the eye for only 30 seconds.

(6)Is the surgery painful? Will it be painful afterwards?

LASIK surgery is completely painless. The disturbance during surgery is minimal because local anaesthetic drops are used. Few patients have a sense of foreign body in the eye that lasts only for a few hours, something that is connected with the long-lasting use of contact lenses. Sleep after the surgery will help you exceed this feeling and relax. In PRK, light discomfort may exist at the 1st operating day, as well as a foreign body sensation or photophobia that are controlled with pain killers and results in 2 or 3 days.

(7) Is the result permanent?

The result of correction is permanent and is not degraded in the course of time.

(8)What should I pay attention to after surgery?

  • Do not rub your eyes for a few days
  • Do not drive the day of surgery. Usually you can drive when you feel sure for your sight
  • You can swim and gym after 15 days from surgery and after consulting your doctor
  • In the bathroom do not let water or soap enter your eyes
  • Avoid substances that can irritate your eyes like shampoo, tobacco etc
  • Avoid the use of cosmetics or make-up for at least 15 days from surgery

top

(9)What symptoms will I have after surgery?

  • In few patients perhaps light nuisance and a sense of foreign body in the eye
  • Perhaps some fluctuations in the sight during the first few days

top

(10)Have they reported any long-lasting complications?

The surgery is in use for more than 15 years and it has been proved that the possibility of serious complications is minimum. With the new advanced technology lasers the complications that had been presented during the first years become more and more rare. However even in these infrequent cases the complications (haze or inflammation) are faced completely with suitable pharmaceutical treatment. We can say that the complications of wearing contact lenses are much more frequent than those of Refractive Surgery.

(11)In how much time will I see clearly?

The re-establishment of sight after Lasik surgery is direct and your life without glasses starts the same day. With PRK vision gets improved reaching 70-80% in about 10-15 days, while the maximum effect is on 20-30 days postoperatively.
